More information:

Kenya, Baragoi, Nachola. A group of Turkana girls assemble to celebrate a marriage. There is much to be learnt from the language of beads. Red is the colour of blood, which wards off evil spirits that may haunt a person when someone dies. Blue is the colour of the sky, a sign of munificence, fertility and an abundance of the necessities of a pastoral life, Black is the colour of shade and coolness, which is believed to keep sorcerers at bay and render cusses harmless. Infants wear black beads round their heads , wrists or ankles as a prevention against illness. White is the colour of sacrificial animals used to ratify peace treaties, a sign of good things to come. Orange is the colour of dust devils, which are propelled by the evil spirits of the dead bent on destruction. People wear this colour to commune with, and appease, their ancestors and to seek Akuj's (the Almighty) help protecting their children. Green is the colour of lush grass and chyme, and is worn solely for beauty.
