More information:

Jacob Locher (1471-1528), known as Philomusus , wrote plays in Latin and was the first German author to stage a tragedy on the classical model. He lived at the beginning of the movement to be known as the Reformation and talked of errors of classic heretical sects. His plays treated contemporary events as a means of influencing the leaders of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1497, he translated into Latin the humanistic moralistic poem Ship of Fools, written by this former teacher Sebastian Brandt .This woodcut, dating to 1497, shows the Fool s Ship in Locher s translation .
