In Kanazawa City, three "Chaya-gai" or teahouse district streets where traditional Geisha houses and restaurants gather have remained from the time of the Edo Period: Nishi Chaya-gai (west teahouse street), Higashi Chaya-gai (east teahouse street), and Kazue-machi. The rows of beautiful Edo period "Chaya" teahouses, with red painted wooden window frames on the ground floor and storm shuttered windows on the second floor, lining stone-paved streets, fill the street with an air of Japanese prestige.Not only teahouses, but also soba noodle restaurants, sugared bean specialty shops, and restaurants and merchandise shops of renovated old teahouses are also located along the street. Just wandering through this area is fun. Even now, brilliant entertainment by Geisha takes place in the evenings, you can hear the sound of Samisen and Taiko (drums) from the lighted teahouses. The "Higashi Chaya-gai" (east teahouse street) which established in 1820 is the largest of the three teahouse districts. It is designated as an important architectural preservation district of Japan. A line of teahouses stand side by side on the both sides of the "Higashi Chaya-gai" street. This is a Japanese-style restaurant street where the glory of its past still remains today.
