The trapezium-shaped traffic island, at the centre of Astor Place, is a popular meeting place and skateboarding centre. The island, since 1967, has been the site of Tony Rosenthal's outdoor sculpture 'Alamo', a large black steel cube (sides 8ft long and weighing 820 kg) mounted on one corner and capable of being spun on its vertical axis.
