Giant Stag Beetle (Lucanus elaphus) male on oak wood. This species appears in early summer and is often seen in old growth and old 2nd growth forests with a significant hardwood canopy. Oaks are a favored tree. The old growth forest on the Congaree river floodplain is an excellent habitat for this species. Congaree National Park, South Carolina, June.
