Douglas Haig, a Scottish Border lord, was commander of the British army forces at the Battle of Loos (Artois) and throughout much of the First World War. In memory of the hundreds of thousands who lost their lives and were buried with a standard-issue headstone in war cemeteries overseas, Haig requested that his own headstone be identical to a Private soldier.
