View of Florence from the dome of the Cattedrale Santa Maria del Fiore also known as the Duomo . The dome or cupola of the Duomo designed by Brunelleschi was the world's largest when it was completed in 1436 and stood 91 metres in height, this was increased to 114 metres two years later when a crowning "lantern" in white marble was added to the top. Equally notable is Giotto's Campanile or bell tower which can be seen on the left of the image. The eighty-five meter high tower was completed in 1359.
