Hydropower plants produce about 25 percent of the world's electricity and supply more than 1 billion people with power. Water power is a renewable energy source that does not cause as much pollution as energy produced by the burning of fossil fuels. Hydropower plants work on the simple concept that water flowing turns a turbine wheel which rotates a generator which produces electricity.
