The Ekeko is a figure in Aymara mythology said to bring good fortune and riches. He has ancient origins in legend as a small stocky man called Iqiqu who wandered the countryside helping people and making them happy. As a reward he was given special powers by the gods to perform miracles. His story has since merged with Catholic beliefs and his appearance changed. He is especially honoured on 24th January, the first day of the Alasitas festival but many Bolivians keep a figure in their house and make offerings to him all year round.
