Royal Geographical Society sesquicentennial pewter tankard issued 1980 on the RGS's 150th anniversary. New Zealand's Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepal's Sherpa Tenzing Norgay are shown preparing for the first ascent of the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, as part of England's expedition led by Sir John Hunt. On 29 May 1953 they reached "the roof of the world" at 8, 848 metres or 29, 029 feet above sea level. Photographed against a pure white background
