Placido Domingo's family emigrated in 1949 to Mexico where he grew up and studied voice, piano and conducting at the Mexico City Conservatory. He made his operatic debut at the Monterrey opera and then spent two and a half years with the Israel National Opera, singing 280 performances in 12 different roles. His international breakthrough came in 1968. One of the most high-profile tenors of the 20th and 21st century he has appeared in over 100 different roles. Recently he began expanding into the German repertoire and has achieved great success among others in the title roles of Wagner's 'Parsifal' and 'Lohengrin', as Siegmund in 'The Valkyries' and 'The Flying Dutchman'. In 1996 he became the artistic director of the Washington Opera. He often collaborates with the Spanish tenor Placido Domingo and the Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti who form the musical trinity of classical opera. Domingo was born in Madrid, Spain on 21 January 1941.
