(dpa) - Angela Merkel (R), Chairwoman of the German opposition party CDU, bids Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan (L) farewell after talks in Berlin, 3 September 2003. Erdogan made a strong call for his country to be admitted to the European Union, arguing that such a move would make Turkey a model for the entire Islamic world. Turkey's fast-track reforms aimed at making the country fit for membership were proving that Islam was not incomaptible with holding Western values, he said. Merkel, however, is still sceptical about Turkey joining the EU. The three-day-visit to Berlin is Erdogan's first official visit to Germany since his taking office in March.
