Detail of a fresco (fourteenth-century) depicting the Annunciation, church of San Marco in Tuscania, province of Viterbo, Latium region, Italy. The Annunciation has been one of the most frequent subjects of artistic representation in Christian art, particularly during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Frescos depicting this scene have appeared in Roman Catholic churches for centuries, and usually show Our Lady, the Angel Gabriel and the Dove, representing the Holy Spirit. The characteristic of this fresco is the Child Jesus (in Italian: Bambino Crucifero), which replaces the Dove.
