A march and demontration in Buenos Aires down Avenida del Mayo on March 23rd, 2008 by thousands of people marking the 32nd anniversary of the coup d'etat that overthrew the government of Peron and ushered in a bloody military rule. This was an extremely painful time, from 1976-83, when the dictators "disappeared" about 30, 000 people. From the many ceremonies, speeches and marches throughout the country, it is clear the Argentines don't want it to happen again and are still missing the many loved ones that were killed. At the front of the march friends and relatives carred a long, narrow banner with photos of the 30, 000 "desaparacidos". The paper reported that "in San Juan province, Governor Jose Luis Gioja said that 'the purpose of remembering was not to generate resentment or hatred but to combat impunity, ensure that justice is served and restore the values of society in the context of the rule of law." The people want those responsible prosecuted, and the current government has been trying to speed up the process. There are now 22 trials going on involving 45 defendants and 619 victims of human rights violations during the dictatorship. An additional 51 other cases are at various stages of the judicial process and have yet to come to trial.
