Decorative Boss (1475-1500). Small boss carved with a simple, stylish rose. It originally comes from a parish church. Roses were sometimes used as heraldic devices or symbolically. This one seems to have been essentially decorative. Large numbers of bosses like these were used to decorate the interiors of churches.
