MP Jack Ashley (l) and R.K. Beaumont, secretary of the Maria Colwell Memorial Fund, at the public meeting in Trafalgar Square, London, during Maria Colwell Day. The day is to remember the seven-year-old girl who was beaten to death by her step-father in January 1973. Alongside them is a life-size statue of Maria, which is sculptured in steel and shows Maria scavenging from a dustbin with one arm raised in mute appeal for help. It is to be presented annually to a person who does the most in the past year to prevent child cruelty. Today's meeting called upon the government for an immediate change of child care laws to save other children from Maria's fate.
