Ascension Island is an extremely isolated and relatively young oceanic island. It lies about 8 degrees south of the Equator and is approximately mid way across the Atlantic Ocean from Africa to South America. The island is 11.5 Km from north to south and 14 Km from west to east and has an area of 97 square Km with extremely rugged volcanic terrain. Comfortless Cove is one of the two relatively safe beaches for swimming on the island. Even so in rough weather it can have strong under currents and swimming would be risky.
