A cell undergoing apoptosis is seen in the center of the image surrounded by other normal cells (shaded lighter). Apoptosis is a natural physiological process leading to cell death. Apoptosis is sometimes called programmed death resulting from the cells internal suicide program. Morphologically, the cell nucleus becomes globulous and opaque (apoptotic globules). Apoptosis is different from necrosis which is a pathological process resulting in cell death due to a physical or chemical aggression. These cells are animal cells growing in an in vitro culture.
