Apoptosis is sometimes called programmed death resulting from the cells internal suicide program. Morphologically, the cell nucleus becomes globulous and opaque (apoptotic globules). Apoptosis is different from necrosis which is a pathological process resulting in cell death due to a physical or chemical aggression. These cells are animal cells growing in an in vitro culture.
