Capsid Bugs are small sap-sucking insects related to greenfly. They feed on young vegetative growth, and while feeding they inject a small mount of mildly toxic saliva that kills the cells around the feeding area. As the apple grows, this ‘damaged’ area develops into a raised corky pimple as seen clearly in this image.
