More information:

One of the traditional cable ferries across the River Rhine at Basel (Bale) in Switzerland. There are several of these ferries in Basel, and they all work by the same method – using the power of the flow to drive them across. The ferry is attached to a cable that stretches across the river. When it is time to depart the ferryman pushes the rudder hard over and secures it. The pressure of the water on the rudder steers the boat into the current but, as it is attached firmly to the cable it cannot turn. So, held at an angle to the flow, it gets pushed across the river to the far bank. To return, the ferryman simply pushes the rudder over in the opposite direction.
