The Bristlecone Pine survives for several thousand years. The twisted shape bear witness to their basic hardiness. Very often harsh conditions such as drought, snow and frost kill parts of the tree, leaving only a single branch alive, which is fed by the roots remaining. Perhaps this tree's greatest enemy is drought; this exposes the tree therefore depriving it of its nourishment.
