Border guards watching the opening of an incomplete escape tunnel to West Berlin. They disguised as post office clerks but were unmasked because of their boots. An escape tunnel was discovered across from the sector border at corner Eberswaler Street / Oderberger Street. The Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic were split into west and east by an iron curtain from 13th August 1961, the day of the building of Berlin Wall, to the fall of the wall on 9th November 1989.
