The Battle of Port Arthur (February 8-9, 1904) signalled the start of the Russo-Japanese War. The battle began as a surprise night attack by Japanese destroyers on the Russian fleet anchored in the harbor of Port Arthur in Manchuria, which today is part of China. It is this attack that is pictured in this contemporary Japanese woodcut.
