Spondyliosoma cantharus can be found solitary or in groups from the Mediterranean to the west coast of Africa. They are omnivorous, meaning they feed on both, plants and smaller animals, including mollusks and crustaceans. Black sea breams are encountered on sea grass meadows and rocky reefs or sandy areas up to a depth of 300 m.
