To commemorate the opening of Birkenhead Park, 170 years ago in 1847, a Blue Plaque, issued by Conservation Areas Wirral, is unveiled at the visitor centre by the Mayor of Wirral, Cllr Pat Hackett. Also in attendance is Labour MP for Birkenhead, Frank Field, and Wirral council dignitaries. The park was designed by Joseph Paxton and created by landscape gardener, Edward Kemp. Birkenhead Park is the worlds first publicly funded civil park, and was the inspiration for Central Park in New York, USA. © Paul Warburton
