More information:

Photo shows the pebbly beach of Bearreraig bay and Storr Lochs Hydro-Electric power station near Portree on the Isle of Skye. The building houses three 800KW hydro-electric turbines/alternators that are powered by water piped down from the dam on Loch Leathan (one of the Storr Lochs) at the top of the cliffs, some 150m above. The pipes coming from the dam can be seen on the hill behind together with a very steep narrow gauge railway track (just to the left of the pipes) which allows materials to be winched down the steep cliff to the power station. This was Skye's first proper power station, opened in 1952, at which time it could meet the energy needs of the entire Island and provided electricity to many islanders for the first time, causing great excitement. Now this station is connected into a wider electricity supply network which covers Northern Scotland and the turbines are switched on as required by that network. Skye's requirements have risen threefold and are also drawn from the same network.
