Vintage photo of American businessman, diplomat and political figure Joseph P. Kennedy Sr (1888 - 1969) - father of US President John F. Kennedy (JFK). Kennedy made a substantial fortune by various means including stock market speculation, real estate investments and motion picture distribution and was a leading member of the Democratic Party and the Irish Catholic community. He was also the first Chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from 1934 to 1935, the first Chairman of the US Maritime Commission (1936 - 1938) and served as US Ambassador to Britain (1938 - 1940). He is most famous for having been head of the Kennedy family political dynasty with three of his four sons having notable political careers. Eldest son Joseph P. Kennedy Jr (1915 - 1944) was killed in action in World War II but second son JFK (1917 - 1963) rose to become President before famously being assassinated. Third son Robert "Bobby" F. Kennedy (1925 - 1968) served as US Attorney General (1961 - 1964) and as a US Senator before being assassinated while running for President and youngest son Edward "Ted" Kennedy (1932 - 2009) was a US Senator for almost 47 years. The photo, by Harris & Ewing, was taken in December 1939 in Washington DC while Kennedy was Ambassador to Britain.
