Agostina, the Maid of Saragossa (1786-1857), was a Spanish heroine who defended Spain during the Peninsular War. On June 15, 1808, the French army stormed Zaragosa. Agustina, arriving on the ramparts watched defenders fall to French bayonets. With the French troops a few yards away, Agustinaran ran forward and fired a cannon shredding a wave of attackers at point-blank range. The sight of a lone woman bravely manning the cannons inspired the fleeing Spanish troops to return and after a bloody struggle, the French gave up the assault on Zaragosa and abandoned their siege.
