Agate is a member of the gem quality quartz mineral family that forms crystal masses with some crystal terminations. This specimen is a dye-enhanced geode, rich in colour, as agate can be lighter or given to colour zoning. Agate crystallises largely in pegmatitic and hydrothermal deposits, with smaller crystals found in sedimentary and metamorphic rock. They are found widespread across the globe.
