A woman nicknamed Molly Pitcher was said to have fought for the colonists during the American Revolution. Not all believed she ever lived, but may have been a composite figure representing women who brought water to the troops on the battlefield. Some say she was really Mary Ludwig Hays. A contemporary witness said that that during the Battle of Monmouth in June 1778, Mary Hays helped her husband William load and fire a cannon.
