The altar stands 3ft 4inches high and is almost square, being 2ft x 1ft 10inches. Tradition has it that the altar was discovered under the floor of the north chapel and stayed in the church for a period before being removed early in the 18th century to be used as a horse block at a local Inn. It is possible that the iron ring was inserted at this time to tether horses, while their owners took refreshment at the Inn. It was eventually removed, repaired and placed on the vicarage lawn around the mid 18th century, where it remained until being placed in its present position at the base of the tower, inside the church, in 1926. It is said to be one of the best specimens in England.
