A photograph of a brown anole lizard resting on a tree trunk in New Orleans, Louisiana. The brown anole Anolis sagrei is small, semi-arboreal lizard with relatively long toes and reduced toe pad surfaces, well suited for running and jumping. Color is variable, ranging from light gray to brown to almost black, commonly with irregular patches or mottled patterns, spots, chevrons and a series of light-colored lines. The tail is somewhat laterally compressed. A prominent identifying feature of this species is the extensible dewlap or throat fan which can be yellow to red-orange in color and is used in territorial and mating displays.
