A customer undertakes a AIDS test offered free-of-charge by a doctor of an HIV awareness group at a bar in Tokyo, Japan. Gynaecologist Dr Tsuneo Akaeda, who visits the Tokyo bar as part of the Girl's Guard volunteer group, says the number of HIV infection rates surged in 2008 to about 5, 000 compared with 1, 500 a year earlier. "The figure is probably much higher because there are people who probably have it but are too scared to be diagnosed, " Akaeda says. "Awareness in Japan is on the 'it couldn't happen to me' level, " says a customer who undertook the test offered by Akaeda at the Club Jamaica bar in Tokyo's notorious Roppongi entertainment district.
