Mt Rainier is part of the Cascade Mountain Range of western North America, here seen from the south near Plummer Peak. There are many hiking and camping opportunities in Mt Rainier National Park. The mountain is about 80 miles south of Seattle, Washington, and 120 miles north of Portland, Oregon. ---- For the first time ever, in November 2006 (only days after this photo), the park was temporarily closed due to violent river floods and debris flows.
