A 1950 picture of now French President, Jacques Chirac (left) with English businessman John King, 46 years ago the two had met during an exchange visit as teenagers. The parents of 14-year-old Chirac had contacted a school in post-war Britain seeking an exchange visit with a suitable English teenager. John King, then aged 14 and a pupil at St Joseph Williamson's Mathematical School in Rochester, Kent, was keen to take up the offer. His parents agreed and thus began a friendship which was to linger long in both John and Jacques' memories. See PA story POLITICS Chirac.
