A concrete tablet on the grounds of the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois is inscribed with Abraham Lincoln's Farewell Address, a speech made by president-elect Lincoln in Springfield on Feb. 11, 1861 on his way to his inauguration in Washington, D.C. Several thousand citizens gathered to see Lincoln depart. Lincoln gave this brief, impromptu speech from his railroad car shortly before he departed, a speech which became famous.
