Duringthis time he had the good fortune of being able to hear thedebate in the Senate of the United States, on the 26th ofJanuary, 1830, between Daniel Webster and Robert Y.Hayne of South Carolina. While in Washington Mr.Carew secured orders for paper from that veteran printerand publisher of the G/ol?e, Duff Green. Through himhe was introduced to many of the celebrated men of thosetimes. On the 24th of September, 1833, Mr. Carew marriedEliza, daughter of Josiah Bardwell of South Hadley Falls.She died May 7, 1874. About the year 1845 ^^ retired from the paper mill fora time, and with David S. Damon engaged in a generalmilling business, the grinding of grain and rock salt, thelatter of which came from Nantucket, Mass. His former employers, Howard & Lathrop, having metwith heavy losses, were obliged to go into bankruptcy.The mill passed into the possession of Messrs. White &Sheffield of New York, who put Mr. Carew in charge of theestablishment.
