Since 1990 the historic centre of San Gimignano has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 14 out of 72 medieval towers (12th – 14th century) have survived. They gave the city its nicknames Manhattan of Tuscany, Medieval Manhattan or the Town of Fine Towers. The remaining towers are almost unchanged and well preserved. Torre Grossa built in 1310 is the tallest tower in San Gimignano (54 m) and is one of the best known of Tuscany's medieval towers.
