Recess at a middle school, Moscow, Russia, 1992. Middle school girls playing in a school hallway at a Russian public middle school (levels 5-9) in the late fall, less than a year after the end of the Soviet Union. At the start of the 20th century the Russian Empire was educationally backwards, a 1897 census found that 24 percent of the population over the age of nine were literate. After the Revolution of 1917 the Bolshevik Party set out to transformation education guided by the principles of Karl Marx and progressive education in the West. More than 70 years later when the Soviet Union ceased to exist in December 1991, literacy in Russia was over 99% for both men and women.
