Pulmonary fibrosis. Coloured x-ray showing the lungs of a 65-year-old woman with pulmonary fibrosis or scarring of the lungs. This condition can result in serious breathing problems. Accumulation of excess fibrous connective tissue (orange) thickens the walls of the lungs and reduces oxygen concentration in the blood. In some patients a specific cause can be diagnosed, but in others the cause cannot be determined. In pulmonary fibrosis the lung damage is permanent.
