In 1931 Napier was practically razed by an earthquake with a 7.8 magnitude. In the following years many new buildings where built in then modern Art Deco style creating a unique ensemble. Every year in February the people of Napier celebrate the resurrection of their city during Art Deco Weekend with vintage costumes and classic cars.
