Kolkata's yellow taxis are lately "hardly visible on the streets" of the city, according to a publication by "Kolkata on Wheels", a monthly motoring and lifestyle magazine. The yellow taxi's reputation has been shrinking in the last decade, and there are other determining factors. The Ambassador, the car model used by the yellow cabs, is no longer produced. Hindustan Motors, the Kolkata-based fabricant, has stopped manufacturing of all models and variants of the Ambassador in 2014. Meanwhile, the government has also "made it mandatory for the yellow taxis which are older than 15 years to be discontinued." New generation of metered taxis and competitions with multi-national companies with digital technologies are also among the reasons.
