The march was called in response to the Israeli military action in Gaza and the mounting civilian casualties, including many thousands of The march was called in response to the Israeli military action in Gaza and the mounting civilian casualties, including many thousands of children. The Israeli action was in response to a terror attack bt the militant group Hamas on 7 October 2023 which killed around 1400 people and left more than 200 missing, presumed taken hostage. The march, the biggest in London for many years with more than 300000 participants included people from all ages and faiths, including Jewish groups. It was controversial as it was held on Remembrance Day, when the nation commemorates the signing of the armistice at the end of the First World War. In the event, the march was a peaceful protest, and a two minute silence was scrupulously observed by all. The only violence reported occurred at Whitehall, near the Cenotaph where extreme right wing groups attacked the police.
