When a picture is so evidently by some great artist that therecannot be any doubt as to who painted it, a signature is valuableas confirming the general opinion ; but the mere fact of an artistsname being on a picture is very slight evidence that it waspainted by him. Painters have also varied their signatures so much that it isimpossible to give a Correct idea of them by examples.
