Historic tourism development in the US includes the story of Fred Harvey, the Harvey House, and the Harvey House Girls. The Barstow Harvey house, now an Amtrak station, opened in 1911 and operated in conjunction with the Santa Fe Railway, was in operation until 1973 when the Santa Fe closed the station. The Casa del Desierto was bought and restored by the city of Barstow, California and is one of the few remaining Harvey Houses albeit no longer operating as one.
