Domestic migration is a social restructuring in which the population moves from rural to urban areas. It is related to the mechanization of agriculture, the increase in the size of the farm and the move to a less labor-intensive farming method. In Finland, migration has been increased by the mechanization of forestry. Migration has caused a decline in the demand for services in rural areas and hence the closure of shops, schools, post offices and banks, and the abolition of public transport to rural areas. In Finland, emigration has taken place since the late 19th century. In 1860, over 90% of the workforce worked in agriculture and forestry, in 1900 about 75%, in 1960 35% and in 2000 less than 10%.
