October 14, 1947 A Bell XS-1 (tail no. 6062), piloted by USAF Capt. Chuck Yeager, exceeded the speed of sound in history's first supersonic flight. The NACA instrumented the aircraft and planned the flight, and would soon reach supersonic speeds in the second X-1 under its control.
