The region is contains roughly 26 million people, 11 million of whom are the ethnically Turkic Uyghurs who still call the region East Turkistan . The CCP has placed upwards of 1 million Uyghurs in reeducation camps, as well as performing widespread surveillance of the non-Han residents.
