Mr Samuel Birkenshaw, of 123, Eldon Street, Oldham, the winner of an Old Bill lookalike competition run by The Bystander. Old Bill was the central cartoon character created by Captain Bruce Bairnsfather in his series of cartoons about trench life published in The Bystander - an 'old contemptible', curmudgeonly soldier, whose stoicism and off-hand brand of humour won the hearts of the readers both at the front and at home. Mr Birkenshaw is an incredible likeness! Date: 1919
