Model reconstruction showing a LIFTING JACK which consists of a vertical toothed rod (or toothed wheel), a hand crank, a sprocket and a toothed wheel. The action of the hand crank meshing with the sprocket moves the platform, by meshing on a larger toothed wheel, allowing it to go up or down the vertical toothed rod. Therefore, this device not only facilitates moving a heavy object from bottom to top, it also saves a great amount of energy, as it transforms the circular motion into rectilinear motion. based on a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), Italian artist and polymath. Codex Atlanticus - folio 359 r.
